Microgreens
and
watering
One of the most labourintensive and hardest part of the production of microgreens is the watering, especially when you start to scale your production. We at Nordamark experienced this first hand when we started out with using the established tray and soil method.

The main issue comes from overwatering especially at the later stages. When you bottomwatering using soil and trays the amount of water is critical.
To little it will wilt and die, to much and you will have fungus or mold forming. When you have many trays in diffrent stages this becomes even more problematic.
Automation with
soil and Trays
Automating the watering for soil and tray system is so hard. We tried using ebb and flow for a while but without mush success. The problems we ran into was either to mush water or to little in the diffrent stages of growth.
Many times the shelf leveling was a bit off and we had trays that got to mush water on one side and nothing on the other.
ebb and flood requires alot of water which requires sturdy frames for your shelfs.
Solution
After many tests and experiments we knew the NFT (nutrient film technique) worked really well when it came to watering. NFT works by pouring water on one side and then it flows to the other side, either continueslly or just a few times a day.

Result
Because of the design of the channel you will create good circulation underneath the growing media and any execess water will drain away because of gravity, it's a lot easier to keep a good moisture level in the growing media this way.
And also makes it alot easier to scale the system by adding more Nord Grow Units (NGS). This can be a closed looped system (which means you have a water tank) or run to waste where you only add new fresh water every time.
